"Kick the tires and light the fires"

"Kick the tires and light the fires." - An expression used by fighter pilots in the United States, that means to take off. Specifically, the "kick the tires" refers to a preflight check of the landing gear, and "light the fires" refers to the ignition of the after burners, a part of the engine which burns extra gas in order to give a speed boost, which is always used during take off.
