'Into The Open' Exhibition

Into the Open : New Paintings, Prints and Sculpture by Contemporary Black Artists in 1984.

This exhibition is the first major survey by a municipal gallery of contemporary work by black artists in Britain. It has been selected, at the invitation of Sheffield City Arts Department , by two people closely involved with black artists in Britain, Lubiana Himid and Pogus Caesar.

Their aim is to give an indication of the range and richness of art made by contemporary Afro Caribbean artists. The exhibition, as a first broad look at the work in this area, is necessarily only a sample of the work being produced. We hope we will be able to continue to expand the awareness of this work in the future, to follow up 'Into the Open' with a number of new small and large scale projects which will serve to increase our knowledge of, and provide more opportunities to enjoy, the work of black artists in Britain.
