A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles was the first title of what became the Oxford English Dictionary. The Philological Society of London agreed to the project in 1858. At the suggestion of Richard Chenevix Trench, it was a truly collaborative project, with a large number of volunteers reading source materials and sending citations to the editor.
The first fascicle (volume) of the dictionary was published in 1884, and the final fascicle in 1928. It was renamed as the Oxford English Dictionary when it was reprinted in twelve volumes, with a single-volume supplement, in 1933.
