African Window

The African Window is the national cultural history museum (NCHM) of South Africa. It is situated in Pretoria, Gauteng.

The NCHM was amalgamated with the Pretoria-based Transvaal Museum for Natural History and the South African National Museum for Military History (situated in Johannesburg) on 1 April 1999 to form the Northern Flagship Institution. The Institution is managed by a chief executive officer and a board, which replaced the three separate previous museum boards.

The museum currently resides in the old Mint building at 149 Visagie Street, which was re-built and opened on 1 March 1997.

The collection of the museum includes:

  • Objects (excavated archaeological material and artworks).
  • Historical documents.
  • Archives.
  • Various current and historical audiovisuals.
  • Stone Age, Iron Age and historic archaeology sites.
  • Historical buildings.
  • Early domesticated animals.

Daily visiting hours are from 08:00 to 16:00.
