Akhaltsikhe

Akhaltsikhe is a small city in southwestern Georgia. It is situated on the both banks of a small river Potskhovi , which separates the city to the old city in the north and new in the south. The name of the city translates as Newcastle, coming from the new castle the Ottoman conquerers built in the 17th century on the south bank after destroying Georgian castle in the north. Before the conquest, The city was called Lomisi.
