Akure

Akure is a city in the southwestern region of Nigeria, and is the capital of Ondo state. The city has a population of approximately 587,087. Rock engravings dating back to the Mesolithic period, have been discovered on the outskirts of Akure, as has the oldest Homo Sapiens fossil to have been found in West Africa to thus far, dating back to around 11,000 years ago.

Akure people are of the Yorùbá ethnic group. The city has a university, the Federal University of Technology Akure. It also has local television and radio stations, NTA Akure , Ondo state television , Sunshine Radio Akure , and FM Akure .

In the commercial sector, Akure is the trade center for a farming region. Yams, cassava, corn, and tobacco are grown. Cotton is grown and used to weave cloth.

For sporting events, Akure has a stadium with a capacity of 15,000 spectators and a second-division professional league team, the Sunshine Football Club .
