Although Albanian is an ancient tongue, the oldest known document in the language is from November 8, 1462, a formula of baptism (Albanian: Formula e Pagėzimit) by the bishop of Durrės, Pal Engjėlli. There is also a German-Albanian dictionary by Arnold Von Harf from 1497, and the oldest known Albanian printed book, Meshari or missal that was written by Gjon Buzuku, a Catholic cleric, in 1555.
The lack of earlier examples of written Albanian is thought to be due to the influence of Greek and Latin.
