Albany is a village located in Athens County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 808.

Geography

Albany is located at 39°13'44" North, 82°12'1" West (39.228787, -82.200363).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.80% is water.

History

Albany, Ohio was founded in the 1840s. It was one of several stops in Athens, County for the Underground Railroad and many former slaves decided to stay in the village. The first school in Athens, County for African Americans was in Village, which was then over 90% African American.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 808 people, 352 households, and 222 families residing in the village. The population density is 251.6/km² (649.6/mi²). There are 400 housing units at an average density of 124.5/km² (321.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.28% White, 1.11% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.87% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 352 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $31,534, and the median income for a family is $42,750. Males have a median income of $30,750 versus $22,083 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,047. 13.2% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.6% of those under the age of 18 and 15.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Political Standing

Athens County is Dominated by Democrats, as is the Majority of the Village. 2004 saw a bitter battle between K. Pyle and A. Trout for Clerk of Courts of Athens County. Pat Lang of Albany is attempting to oust Rep. Jimmy Stewart from his State Representative seat.
