The Albert Dock in Liverpool, England, was opened in 1846 as a combined dock and warehouse system. Shipping entered the dock from either Canning Half Tide Dock to the North or Salthouse Dock to the east. It is named after Prince Albert, he attended the openeding on the Royal Yacht Fairy , in 1846. and attended a reception for 1000 people, in the dock warehouses
Built entirely of cast iron, brick and stone, this was a first in the UK and the first non-combustible warehousing system in the world. It was designed by Jesse Hartley. It was upgraded in 1848 with the world's first hydraulic warehouse hoist system. The 5 Grade I buildings make the Albert Dock complex the largest set of Grade 1 Listed Buildings in the UK. In 1972 the dock closed to shipping, and was redeveloped in the early 1980's.
For many years the ITV television show This Morning, hosted by Richard and Judy, was broadcast from the studios in the dockside buildings. The dock itself was used as the location for the weather forecast. Presenter Fred Talbot would describe the outlook while walking around a floating map of the British Isles, jumping between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
