Alenia Marconi Systems

Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS) is a major European defence electronics company and is a joint venture between BAE SYSTEMS and Finmeccanica.

AMS was formed in 1998 by the merger of GEC-Marconi Radar and Defence Systems and Alenia Difesa. GEC's interest passed to British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) in 1999 with the sale of its Marconi Electronic Systems defence division.

In 2002 AMS' missile systems division was merged with Aerospatiale Matra Missiles and Matra BAe Dynamics to form MBDA.

On January 28 2005 BAE and Finmeccannica announced the dissoloution of their AMS joint venture. Alenia Marconi's UK and Italian operations will be taken over by the respective partners. Due to the higher value of the UK assets BAE will pay Finmeccannica £50.5m to balance the transaction.
