Alex Raymond (1909-1956) was an American comic strip artist, best known for his work on Flash Gordon. Other strips he drew include Secret Agent X-9, Rip Kirby , Tim Tyler's Luck, and Tillie the Toiler . Raymond received a Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 1949 for his work on Rip Kirby .
Raymond served in the US Marines in World War II. He was killed in an automobile accident.
His realistic style and skillful use of shades has continued to be an inspiration for generations of cartoonists.
