Alfred Brehm

Alfred Edmund Brehm (February 2, 1829 - November 11, 1884) was a German zoologist. He was the son of Christian Ludwig Brehm.

Brehm is mostly known for the encyclopaedia Illustriertes Thierleben. Eine allgemeine Kunde des Thierreichs, 1864-1865 (Life of Animals). The second edition (1876-1879, 2nd printing 1883-1887) featured paintings (by Gustav Mützel) based on observations of live animals (which the first edition apparently didn't, since the preface of the 2nd edition makes a point of this). It was often re-issued, at least into the 1960s.
