Altrices

Altrices are birds that hatch in an immature state and are unable to feed themselves for some time. They include most species that nest in relatively secure sites such as tree nests and holes. These include, for example, woodpeckers, owls and many passerines.

Birds which nest on the ground are often able to fend for themselves immediately, and do not fall into this category. They are precocial.
