Amar Gopal Bose (born 1929) is an American-born Indian electrical engineer. His father, Nani Gopal Bose, was an Bengali revolutionary who had to flee Kolkata to avoid persecution by British colonial police. Dr. Bose was born and raised in Philadelphia. After receiving a Ph.D. from MIT, he started doing research on speaker technology, in 1956.
In 1964, he founded the Bose Corporation, which specializes in designing and producing high quality sound systems.
In addition to running his company, Bose was a professor of electrical engineering at MIT for many years until he resigned in 2000. While he retained a professor title, his work at MIT for years was little more than teaching his single acoustics class. Many have speculated that he left because of a conflict between his son, Vanu Bose, and MIT regarding royalties on an invention Vanu created with MIT funding.
