Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen

The Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) is a British trade union. It was founded in 1880 and is one of the trade unions representing train drivers (the other is the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, [RMT]). It is part of the International Transport Workers' Federation and the European Transport Workers Federation .

According to the character 'Rik' in BBC TV's the Young Ones, ASLEF is an anagram for 'total and complete bastard'.
