Atwater Village is a neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles, California. It is bordered by the Los Angeles districts of Los Feliz on the west, Silver Lake and the Hollywood Hills of Griffith Park on the south, and Glassell Park on the southeast, and by the city of Glendale on the north and east. The Los Angeles River runs alongside it. Principal thoroughfares include San Fernando Road and Los Feliz and Glendale Boulevards, as well as Fletcher Drive. The Golden State and Glendale Freeways run along the district's western and southeastern borders, respectively.
As with much of the city of Los Angeles east of the river, Atwater Village has traditionally been a working-class Latino neighborhood. However, this began to change in the 1990s: as middle-class Armenian immigrants surged into the area, the Los Angeles Police Department managed to crack down on gang activity (in particular, suppressing the notorious Toonerville organization after a major crime spree in the mid-'90s). By the early 2000s, the gentrification of neighboring Silver Lake had drawn many hipsters and working-class gays into Atwater Village, attracted by the area's relatively cheap real estate.
