Avant Guide, derived from the French term avant-garde, is often used to refer to people or actions that lead other people to experiences that are novel or experimental, particularly with respect to the arts and culture. The word "avant" by itself comes from the French "advanced" or "forward." The concept was adopted in English as a metaphor for the work done by small bands of intellectuals and artists as they open pathways through new cultural or political terrain, for the mass of society to follow.
