New York State public school districts are served by regional consortiums known as Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, or BOCES. The BOCES organizations provide support to schools through Cooperative Services (also known as COSER's). The New York Legislature formed the BOCES organization in 1948 to more effeciently meet the needs of individual school districts. Initally, BOCES focused on shared or itenirant teachers, but now also provide special education, alternative education, and career and technical education programs along with many other services. Other states have similar educational service agencies, sometimes called BOCES. BOCES, also provides many districts technology services and transporataion services as well as educational services.
