Battle of Saragarhi

The Battle of Saragarhi, was an 1897 battle between 22 Sikhs defending a British army post, and 10,000 Afghan and Orakazais tribesmen. The battle occurred on September 12, in the North-West Frontier Province. 21 Sikhs and their leader, Havildar Ishar Singh , chose to fight to the death instead of surrendering. All received the Indian Order of Merit .
