Battle of Tolentino

The Battle of Tolentino was the decisive battle in the Neapolitan War, fought by the king of Naples Joachim Murat to keep the throne after the Congress of Vienna. It is also considered the first battle of the Italian unification, since Murat issued a proclamation calling for Italian patriots help to unify Italy.

In the battle, fought over two days, the Neapolitan army, far away from its bases, was defeated by the Austrian army. Murat was obliged to return to Naples, but then he abdicated.
