Bytom (pronounce: Bytom.ogg) is a city in southern Poland with 205,560 inhabitants (1999).
It is situated in the Silesian Voivodship (since 1999), previously in Katowice Voivodship (1975-1998).
Bytom is one of the oldest cities of Upper Silesia and of history reaching back to XI century. Town charter it got already in year 1254. Reach and turbulent history of Bytom, causing changes of and also its location on track connecting West with East of Europe as well as North with South have contributed to development of many cultures, habits and economy. Aware of multi centennial traditions and unity with European nations also Bytom is trying to develop a number of contacts with European cities as we reckon that in fact integration of Europe takes place on local societies level. Inhabitants of Bytom for many years already are conveying contacts with various cities - also very distant ones and their activities are strongly supported by local authorities.
