Canonicus

Canonicus was a Native American chief of the Narragansett. He was a firm friend of English settlers.

It was he who gave to Roger Williams the first land in Rhode Island, 1638.

He was succeeded by his nephew Miantonomoh.

Four ships of the United States Navy have been named for him.
