Carlo Scarpa (1906, Venice - 1978, Sendai), was an Italian architect with a profound understanding of materials. Long periods of apprenticeship under master craftsmen honed his tectonic perception and control. His architecture is deeply sensitive to the changes of time, from seasons to history, rooted in a sensuous material imagination and has been widely praised from Tadao Ando to Mario Botta.
