Khan is a title meaning roughly "supreme monarch" in Mongolian. A khan controls a khanate. Whenever appropriate, it is also translated as emperor.

At a certain period, Khan were clearly distinguished from Khaghan, but Wikipedia uses Khan for the sake of convenience.
