Charlemagne Palestine (born Charles Martin in 1947) is a minimalist composer.
A contemporary of Philip Glass and Steve Reich, Palestine wrote intense, ritualistic music in the 1970s, intended by the composer to rub against audiences' expectations of what is beautiful and meaningful in music. His earliest works were compositions for the carillon and electronic drones, and he is perhaps best known for his piano works (which would often end with him bleeding all over the keyboard).
Recordings of his compositions are becoming available again, spurring increased interest in his music.
