Cyclorama (theater)

A Cyclorama lighting fixture (often abbreviated "cyc") is a more technologically advanced version of a striplight. Rather than using several circuits and lamps to separate the different colors and styles of light, a cyclorama uses a specially shaped moving reflector (controlled by a special lighting board) to change color and style at the touch of a button. This gives the cyc an edge over a striplight because it uses less circuits, takes up much less space on the lighting rail and offers a smoother quality of light even as the changes happen. Unfortunately, the cost and difficulty of control for these units means that many theaters are still unable to make use of them.

These units get there name from the fact that they are often used to light scenic backdrops, also called cycloramas.
