David Bates (born 1952) is a United States painter.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Bates began a master's degree in fine arts at Southern Methodist University in 1975, but suspended his studies when invited to study at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He returned to Dallas in 1977 to complete the masters degree.
