Douglas Jay was born on 23 March 1907 in Woolwich, London.

Alongside Evan Durbin and Hugh Gaitskell, he brought the thinking of John Maynard Keynes to the Labour party. And in 1947 coined the phrase "the man in Whitehall knows best",

He served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury and President of the Board of Trade.
