Douglass Houghton

Douglass Houghton (September 21, 1809October 13, 1845) was an American geologist, medical doctor and mayor of Detroit, Michigan. Douglass Houghton discovered copper in the Keweenaw Peninsula in 1840, leading to the settlement and mining of what's now called Copper Country. Houghton drowned in a storm on Lake Superior. His remains, washed up the following year, were buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. Houghton County, Michigan is named in his honor.
