Dunkeld is a small town in Strathtay (= the River Tay valley) approximately 15 miles North of Perth on the main A9 road into the Highlands and about 2 miles North of the village of Birnam, made famous by Shakespeare's Macbeth. The Cathedral was built from 1325 and under King David I it was the centre of Christianity in all of Scotland before being destroyed during the Reformation of the 16th Century.

The Atholl Memorial Fountain was built as a memorial to John 6th Duke of Atholl in 1866 and amongst other designs, includes Masonic symbolism.

The Battle of Dunkeld

Much of the original town and the Cathedral were destroyed during the Battle of Dunkeld when in August 1689 The 26th Foot ( Cameronian Regiment) successfully fought the Jacobites shortly after their victory at the Battle_of_Killiecrankie.
