Dymchurch lies on the Kent coast, south of Hythe and on the Romney Marsh. It is typical of this part of the coast, having originally been a very small village which, during the 1930s, became a much larger settlement. Many of the "houses" were converted railway carriages. The place became one of those for people who wanted to "get away from it all".

Today it has completely changed. It advertises itself in these words:

• The beach itself is made up of sand and small pebbles - watch out for the river outfall pipe There is (sic) lots of pay and display parking right on the seafront (spot the Martello Tower and that's the car park), toilets, ice cream kiosks and a promenade ...
