Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design

Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, an art college in Vancouver, BC, Canada, is named for Canadian artist Emily Carr.

The school was founded as the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts in 1925, and later known as Vancouver School of Art: Decorative and Applied (1933), Vancouver School of Art (1937), Emily Carr College of Art (1978), and Emily Carr College of Art and Design (1981). In 1995, the school was renamed Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.

The school received degree-granting authority through the Open Learning Agency in 1989. It received independent degree-granting authority in 1994, meaning the school could offer degrees in its own name.

Current degree programs include:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts, General Fine Arts, or Photography (since 1994)
  • Bachelor of Design in Communication Design or Industrial Design (since 1994)
  • Bachelor of Media Arts degrees in Animation or Integrated Media (since 1997)
