Foras na Gaeilge

Foras na Gaeilge is the governing body of the Irish language, responsible for the promotion of the language throughout all of Ireland.

The Good Friday Agreement stipulated that a body be created to oversee the furtherance of the Irish language (as well as a body to oversee the furtherance of the Ulster Scots language) across the political divide between the Republic and Northern Ireland, leading to the formation of Foras na Gaeilge on December 2, 1999. The body also serves an advisory role in matters pertaining to the Irish language in both the public and private sectors in the Republic of Ireland (where Irish is the first official language) and Northern Ireland (where Irish is a regional language).
