Fort Fisher was a Confederate stronghold near Wilmington, North Carolina during the American Civil War.
Considered the "Gilbraltar of the South", Fort Fisher was attacked in December of 1864 and fell to Union forces in January of 1865.
As of 2005, Fort Fisher is a National Historic Landmark. The North Carolina Aquarium is located on the site.
