Fort James

Fort James was a originally built by Germans in 1651 on the south bank of the Gambia river but was captured by the British about a decade later. It was variously described as a 'trading post' or a 'slave fort'.

It was less than two miles from Albreda on the river's northern bank that served a similar purpose for the French.
