Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta

Fort Saskatchewan is a tiny city just northeast of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; population roughly 13,000. Main industries are farming and heavy industry. Part of the largest industrial area west of Toronto. Prominent companies with plants in the area include Dow Chemical, Sherritt Inc., Agrium, Shell Canada, Westaim. These plants employ thousands of residents of Fort Saskatchewan and the surrounding area.

Fort Saskatchewan was originally built as a fort on the North Saskatchewan River by the North West Mounted Police under the command of Inspector W.D. Jarvis in 1875. Fort Saskatchewan was incorporated as a village in 1899, as a town in 1904 and as a city in 1985.

Fort Saskatchewan offers many amenities to its residents that keep them fit, entertained, and busy. It has two high schools, several Junior High Schools, and a number of elementary schools. It has a large indoor swimming pool with hot-tub, sauna, and slide; as well as approximately 29km of outdoor paved bike paths and trails, two indoor hockey arenas, a historical museum, and numerous parks and interesting places. A multi-purpose activities centre has recently opened, including a 500 seat auditorium, soccer fields, skating rinks, and fitness rooms.

Fort Saskatchewan is a booming community with many of the things one would expect to find in a large city, serving a small city that still holds its "small town" feel, while residents also appreciate the close proximity of Edmonton and its amenities.

Fort Saskatchewan is home to the Fort Saskatchewan Athletics of the Sunburst Baseball League. Former college and professional baseball players make up the core of the baseball club.

Fort Saskatchewan is the home of actress Evangeline Lilly, of the television series Lost.
