Frances Brooke

Frances (Moore) Brooke (1724 - 1789) was an English author.

Brooke wrote plays, essays, librettos, and novels. She also did some French translations.

She was well-known in London's literary and theatrical communities. She also lived in Quebec, Canada, for 5 years, where she wrote The History of Emily Montague. This was the first novel written in Canada. This brief stint in North America has caused some to label her "the first novelist in North America."

Selected Works

  • The History of Lady Julia Mandeville - 1763
  • The History of Emily Montague - 1769
  • The Excursion - 1777
  • The History of Charles Mandeville
