Hippone was a Phoenician trading post, established in the 9th century BC which became a prosperous Numidian city. It was the ally of Carthage until the fall of the latter. After Jugurtha was defeated Hippone was annexed to the Roman province of Africa Nova. In 393, the synod held in Hippone confirmed the canon lists for the Christianity in the West.
