Howara Checkpoint

Howara Checkpoint (Arabic حاجز حوارة) is the a major checkpoint on one of the four main entrances of Nablus city , it has been establised on October 2000 on the main road connecting Nablus and Ramallah city and its named after the village of Howara and is located near Howara military post.

In 2002 , after operation "Defensive shield " , Israel Defense Forces set opening hours for the checkpoint. the checkpoint was opened during daylight time (winter: 6am - 5:30pm , summer: 5:30am - 7:30pm). in 23 march 2005 , the opening hours were extended until 11pm.

The was open for pedestrians over 40 years old until october 2003, all vehicles were required to issue special permit and to be searched . in noveber 2003 the age group was lowered to 35 years . in june 2004 , the age group was lowered to 30 years old . in december 2004 , the age group was lowered to 25 years old , in march 2005 , the age group was lowered to 20 years old.

The Average delay to pass the checkpoint for pedestrians is around 15 minutes to cross 200 meters , for vehicles the time is around 20 minutes, this includes ambulances and huminitarian organizations vehicles.

The Israel Defense Forces closes the howara checkpoint whenever a security alert is announced . during the past 5 years (As of April 2005)the checkpoint was closed for time ranges varieing between 20 minutes and 7 days.
