Jakko Jan Leeuwangh

Jakko Jan Leeuwangh (born in Alkmaar - 9 september 1972) is a Dutch speed skater. He finished 4th in the 1998 Olympic 1000 m event. The highlight of his career was riding a world record at the 1500 meters, on the 29th of 2000 in Calgary. At that time, when he was leaded by Peter Mueller , Leeuwangh skated 1.45,56, improving the world record of Ådne Søndråls world record of 1.46,43. It took more than a year before the Korean Kyu-Hyeok Lee improved Leeuwangh’s time. In the years after that he suffered with mononucleosis and because of that, he wasn't able to qualify for the 2002 Winter Olympics. After he also failed to qualify for the 2003 World Championship sprint, he announced his retirement from top speedskating.
