Jeremiah Evarts

Jeremiah Evarts was born February 3, 1781 in Sunderland, Vermont. He graduated from Yale College in 1802. He was admitted to the bar in 1806.

In 1798, Jeremiah's father James was taking Jeremiah to Yale College and stopped by the house of Colonel Seth Storrs of Middlebury. The exchanges which took place between James Evarts and Colonel Storrs during this visit are credited with generating the idea to found Middlebury College.

Jeremiah was the father of William M. Evarts who became the United States Secretary of State.

He was the editor of the Panoplist, a relious monthly magazine from 1820 until 1820. He wrote twenty-four essays on the rights of Indians under the pen name "William Penn". He was one of the leading opponents of the removal of the Cherokees from the Southeast.

He died on May 10, 1831 in Charleston, South Carolina.
