John F. Hylan

John Hylan (April 20, 1868January 12, 1936), nicknamed "Red Mike", was the Mayor of New York from 1918 to 1925. He started the IND division of the New York subway. An ally of William Randolph Hearst, Hylan defeated John Peuroy Mitchell in the 1917 election, won election in 1921 and was defeated for re-nomination in 1925 by State Senator James J. Walker. Walker later appointed him to the municipal judiciary.
