Julian Schnabel

Julian Schnabel (born New York, 1951) is an American painter and filmmaker.

He obtained a BFA at the University of Houston in 1973, but did not come to prominence as an artist until the mid-1980s when he became a major figure in the Neo-Expressionism movement. Many of his best-known works are painted on collaged surfaces of broken pottery, often on a wooden support.

Schabel has written and directed two films: Basquiat (1996) and Before Night Falls (2000). The latter he also produced. He was also the painter, photographer and art director for the cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers album '"By The Way".

Julian Schnabel works and lives in New York.
