It was the birthplace and early residence of Russian composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (also written as Peter Tchaikovsky in English and Пётр Ильи́ч Чайко́вский in Russian).

The Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology operates a machine plant here which produces some of Russia's long-range ballistic missiles.
