Kaniv

Kaniv (Polish: Kaniów) is a town on the Dnipro River in Ukraine where the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko is buried. Important trade route in the middle ages and base for Zaporichian Cossacks. Sacked by the Turks in 1458. Site of World War II battle (spectacularly unsuccessful drop of Soviet paratroopers).
