A
kittel (
Yiddish:
קיתל, robe) is a special white robe worn by religious
Jews during the
Days of Awe, on
Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur, and some also during the
Passover Seder. The reason for this is that white symbolizes purity, also causing it to be worn during
weddings. Biblically, it is written that "our sins shall be made as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18). In addition to this usage, the dead are also
buried in a kittel, providing simple dress that assures equality for all in death.
