Layer Cake

Layer Cake is a 2004 British gangster thriller, directed by Matthew Vaughn. It is based on a novel of the same name, written by J.J.Connelly .

The title refers to the numerous layers in the British crime underworld, as well as the numerous plot layers in the film.

The film has been compared to both Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, as all three films focus on British gangsters. Layer Cake is significantly different though, despite having the same producer.

Plot

The film is set in London, and focusses on a successful cocaine dealer called X, (played by Craig). He has a respected place amongst England's mafia, and is just about to retire. However, X's boss, Jimmy Price, (Played by Cranham), gives him a tough assignment. X has to find Charlotte Ryder, the daughter of Edward, on old friend of Jimmy's. There are multiple complications however, 2 million pounds worth of Grade A Ecstacy, a neo-Nazi sect, as well as numerous double-crossings. X has to use all of his considerable talent to secure his own escape, without being drawn back into the 'cake mix'.
