Leaf mine

A leaf mine is a chamber cut into the leaf of a plant by the larvae of a moth, fly, beetle, sawfly or other insect.

The mine often contains frass, or droppings, and it is often possible to identify the insect making the mine by a combination of host plant, mine shape and frass pattern.

A few mining insects utilise other parts of a plant, such as the surface of a fruit.
