Unlike other squares in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Lechmere is not really a commercial center. Named after the Lechmere store that was once located at the spot, it is now best known for the CambridgeSide Galleria , one of the few full-fledged interior shopping malls within the city limits of Boston and Cambridge.

Lechmere is also located close to the Museum of Science .
