Lee Chang-dong (born April 1, 1954) is a South Korean film director with a diversified career. After a career of teaching Korean in high school, he established himself as a renowned novelist. He later turned to moviemaking to many's astonishment, but it took no more than 3 movies to make him acknowledged in the field of motion picture. All of his films received overwhelming critical acclaim, with his latest, Oasis, making him win Director's Award in Venice Film Festival. He served as the minister of Culture and Tourism in the South Korean Government from 2003 to 2004.
